2020 The Arctic Club Dinner Saturday 12th December 7.00 PM

This year we will be holding a virtual dinner and meeting.

A Zoom Link will be sent to your email address and of course you are all very welcome to “attend” the Dinner.  It would be helpful if you could RSVP if you are “attending” so I can add you to the guest list.  This is for two purposes.  I will post a list on the website (see below) so Members will know who is likely to attend and so I can check that we are not likely to go over the 100 limit (I can deal with this if necessary).  The start time for proceedings will be 7.00 PM but you will be able to log on before this and be admitted.

Menu for the evening can be downloaded from this link - ARCTIC_CLUB_DINNER_MENU_2020.pdf.

A guide to the evening

18.30  Zoom opens so Members can log on and iron out any technical difficulties.

19.00  Welcome!

19.05  This year's President, Brendan O'Brien will give a talk entitled "Arctic Mosaic".  Many of you will know about his work and experiences as a pilot in various professional capacities not least in supporting polar expeditions.  The geographic focus his talk at the Dinner will be expeditions to Greenland and Svalbard.

19.25  AGM and update on the Arctic Club Award.

19.30  The Three Traditional Toasts and Official Photograph of the event

19.40  A chance to meet and hear from our current President Elect, Peter Schmidt Mikkelsen, who will be taking over the Presidency from Sunday 13 December.  In the past the Club has a number of overseas nationals as Members including some who were made Honorary Members, such as Ejnar Mikkelsen.  However, Peter will be the Club's first non- UK President. Peter was a member of the Danish Sirus Patrol, has written extensively on the Arctic and has been central to maintaining and preserving huts in North-East Greenland.

19.45  The festivities can continue over a three course dinner. You are welcome to cook the food on the menu, devised by our President, if you so wish and to share a non-virtual drink.  At this time here will be the opportunity to hear from all members on themed topics.

20.30  Carriages for those who wish but the "Bar" will remain open so people can catch up and chat.

To enter into the spirit of the dinner you can wear black tie - at least on the part of your body in camera shot and if, you are technologically-minded, you can have a virtual Arctic background – perhaps a photo from one of your expeditions.  If you want to have a Menu card to add to your collection you can do this by printing the Menu PDF as a booklet.

A date for your 2021 diaries - the Annual Dinner in 2021 will be held in Edinburgh New Club on Saturday 11 December.
