Monday Night Lecture at the Royal Geographical Society on Monday 28 September 2026
The lecture will be given by Professor Sir Steve Sparks a former Gino Watkins Award Fund (GWMF) recipient and is titled ‘Exploring volcanoes’.
The lecture will be in London and will be streamed live. It will also be available online after the event.
Professor Sparks was the recipient of grants from the Gino Watkins Award Fund, the Royal Geographical Society and Imperial College in 1969 for an expedition to Iceland. The lecture evening will celebrate the recent move of the Gino Watkins Fund Award and Arctic Club Award from the University of Cambridge to the RGS.
Steve Sparks has been a Professor of Geology at the University of Bristol since 1989. His research interests are in volcanology and the applications of fluid mechanics in modelling geological flows and applying statistical methods to the assessment of natural hazards and their attendant risks. He was recipient of the 2015 Vetlesen Prize, regarded as equivalent to the “Nobel Prize”for the earth sciences and received the Royal Medal (Physical Sciences) in 2018. He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Natural History Museum. He is a former Chair of the Advisory Committee for Mathematics Education (ACME).
